Stanley G. Payne

Stanley G. Payne is Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. A scholar of Spain since the 1950s, he has published more than twenty books about the country’s history, among them The Spanish Civil War, The Collapse of the Spanish Republic, Why Did the Republic Lose the War?, Franco: A Personal and Political Biography (with Jesús Palacios), and The Path of July 18. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a corresponding member of the Royal Academies of History and of Moral and Political Sciences in Spain. He is a recipient of the Great Cross of the Order of Isabella the Catholic and doctor honoris causa at the King Juan Carlos University.
