Josep Fontana

Josep Fontana (Barcelona, 1931), a disciple of Pierre Vilar, Ferran Soldevila y Jaume Vicens Vives, is one of Spain’s most recognized thinkers. He has taught contemporary and economic history in the University of Barcelona, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and the University of Valencia. He is founder and director of the Jaume Vicens i Vives University History Institute at the Pomeu Fabra University, where he is professor emeritus. He has collaborated with the journals Recerques (1970) and L’Avenç (1976). Among many national and international honors, Josep Fontana received the first National Prize for Culture from the Generalitat de Catalunya for his professional trajectory, and is doctor honoris causa at the universities of Comahue (Argentina), Rovira i Virgili (Tarragona), Valladolid and Girona.
