Carmen Gurruchaga was born in San Sebastián. She began her professional career working for the newspaper Unidad and later for Diario 16 and has worked for several newspapers and television programmes since then. She has received, amongst many prizes and honours, the 1997 Journalists Without Borders Prize, the 2001 Hellman/Hammet Prize and the 2001 Hero of the Year Prize from the magazine Newsweek, and was a judge for the Unesco Freedom of the Press Prize from 2001 to 2004. La prueba is her first novel.
